Bharatha Natyam tribe group

Bharatha Natyam is the indian classical dance form originated from the southern state of Tamil Nadu. Basically, it consists of three main elements: BHA- Bhava, or expression; RA- Ragam, or melody; THA- Thalam, or rhythm; NATYAM means dance.

Originally known as Sadir, Bharatha Natyam existed as a highly evolved temple art form since many centuries and is very complex, including elements of music, drama, poetry, color, and rhythm. In the Hindu tradition, the god Shiva, is the cosmic and supreme dancer Nataraja. As Nataraja dances, so is created the cosmic energy of the universe. The possibilities that exist in dance are tremendous and infinite.

Dance is like a prayer

My guruji taught me only male items, because my personality was not fit for female items. I did not have a sharp nose, fair colour or a thin waist. I learnt male items and Radha female ones. Our guruji designed solo items, tandava for me and lasya for Radha . But then I thought, why don’t both of us perform together.? So in Tarangam, I used to enter as Krishna, Radha as Radha. We have performed together in Umaparinayam, Kumarasambhavam pieces and from Shivpuran. See Dasavatar is a solo dance but we perform together.

Paintings of India in the 1700's and early 1800's

Paintings of India in the 1700's and early 1800's by European artists and Indians painting in the European style

Ever wonder what India looked like before the industrial revolution of the 19th century?

The painting style of India was not a realistic style using the European style of realism. That is the style where the artist attempts to draw or paint something exactly as it looks like. Instead the Indian artists didn't use perspective and painted 2 dimensional art not meant to look realistic. From their paintings we don't really get to see what India really looked like, they were stylists, not realists.

When Mirabai's love comes through Western classical

It was an unusual meeting of cultures when an Indian origin bharatanatyam dancer gave expression to Mirabai's love for Lord Krishna as a soprano sang of the yearning of the 16th century Indian mystic.

As Kalpana Raghuraman - born and brought up in Holland - deftly executed traditional classical dance steps, a Western classical orchestra played in tandem at a performance in Delhi on Friday evening.

This celebration of love, part of the European Union Cultural Week from Sep 5-11 and held at the Sai Auditorium here, was an extraordinary spectacle with the Western classical musicians all dressed in formal black and Kalpana pirouetting to their music in maroon tights and chiffon skirt.

When men tread female turf

The Gotipua dance, performed by young male dancers in feminine roles, has played an important role in preserving Orissa’s dance heritage, writes Jayalakshmi Yegnaswamy.

The tradition of dance can be traced to the ancient times in Orissa. Bas relief depicting dancing damsels in the hills of Udayagiri near Bhuvanaeshwar date back to the 1st century B.C. An ancient treatise Natya Shastra, written by Bharatha Muni on Indian dance makes a reference to the dance of Orissa as Odra-Magadhi. An association between dance and rituals has existed since ancient time. Various ancient Hindu scriptures such as the Utkala Khanda of the Skanda Purana, Visnu Purana, Niladri Mahodaya etc. mention the relationship between the dance and religious rituals. The very first record of the dance of Orissa is found in a Puranic manuscript where rituals are performed in the form of dance to worship Lord Jagannath at the temple of Puri. This tradition prevailed since the period of Ganga rulers in Orissa.
