When Mirabai's love comes through Western classical

It was an unusual meeting of cultures when an Indian origin bharatanatyam dancer gave expression to Mirabai's love for Lord Krishna as a soprano sang of the yearning of the 16th century Indian mystic.

As Kalpana Raghuraman - born and brought up in Holland - deftly executed traditional classical dance steps, a Western classical orchestra played in tandem at a performance in Delhi on Friday evening.

This celebration of love, part of the European Union Cultural Week from Sep 5-11 and held at the Sai Auditorium here, was an extraordinary spectacle with the Western classical musicians all dressed in formal black and Kalpana pirouetting to their music in maroon tights and chiffon skirt.
